We are currently having scarves knitted by talented women in Dhaka. These women are not able to work full time, as they have families to care for. We have enabled them to earn some extra money on top of their husband's wage by working from home in their spare time. Many of them have not knitted for a long time - Bangladesh is quickly becoming industrialised, and many hand makers and artisans have already been forced out of jobs, or made to work in factories or 'sweatshops' in exploitative conditions and for little pay.
One of our knitters, making a scarf in her home.
Bangladeshi wool, amazingly soft!
Looking forward to getting the scarves! Also nervous...
